Bringing Big Prospects

First AEON BiG outlet in Kedah opens, creating 350 new jobs

THE newest AEON BiG store in Jalan Gangsa, Alor Setar, has opened its doors to the public, making it the first outlet by Japanese retail chain Aeon Co (M) Bhd in Kedah.

Built on 9,144sq m of land, the building houses a hypermarket as well as a shopping area with 55 lots offering various products and services.

Speaking at the shopping centre’s opening ceremony yesterday, AEON BiG (M) Sdn Bhd chairman Nagahisa Oyama said that it was their 29th outlet in Malaysia.

“The ‘Look East Policy’ set by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 1982 has strengthened the economic ties between Japan and Malaysia,” he said.

“AEON is grateful to be able to cooperate in developing business prospects.

“After 30 years of AEON Group operating in Malaysia, AEON BiG was formed in 2012.

“It was aimed at exploring and strengthening the hypermarket industry in Malaysia,” said Oyama.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, who signed a plaque at the mall’s opening, congratulated AEON on its latest outlet.

He said the shopping centre had been very well-received by the people.

“The centre will not only enrich the community by creating a new shopping experience for them but also provide more job opportunities.

“The opening of this outlet has created about 350 new jobs.

“Over 7,000 jobs have been created by all the AEON BiG outlets in the country and 80% of the employees are bumiputras,” said Mukhriz.

Also present during the opening of the mall were AEON BiG (M) Sdn Bhd managing director Mitsuru Nakata, developer Belleview Group managing director Datuk Sonny Ho and executive councillor Datuk Suraya Yaacob.

They toured the premises and also visited the Program Citarasa Malaysia exhibition held in collaboration with the state Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Department and the Kedah Development Corporation.

The exhibition from Dec 5 to Dec 31 highlights locally-made products by bumiputras, primarily from the state.

AEON BiG Alor Setar’s operating hours are from 8am to 10.30pm from Mondays to Thursdays, 8am to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, and 8am to 10.30pm on Sundays.
